A guide for families

Keeping an eye on a parent who lives alone. Without a camera, a pendant or a call every morning.

She wants to stay in her own home. You want to know she is all right. Most of the tools in between ask something of her: wear this, charge that, press the button, answer the phone. Here is what each option really gives you, when her doctor should be the one reading the numbers, and where a small radar sensor by her bed fits, with nothing for her to do.

The usual options Categories, not brands

Every option tells you something. Each asks something of her.

The question is not which is best. It is what you need to know, and what she is willing to live with.

What it tells youWhat it asks of herThe catch
A daily phone callThat she picked up, and how she sounds.Answering, every day, at the time you call.Easy to miss, and most people say "I'm fine".
An indoor cameraWhat you happen to see when you look.Being watched in her own home. Many parents refuse one, and it shows the room, not how she is doing.
A medical alert pendantThat she pressed the button.Wearing it, all day, including at night. The right tool for emergencies, but only if it is on and she can press it.
A smartwatchPulse and activity, while worn and charged.Wearing it, charging it, and working a small screen.Watches end up in a drawer.
Motion sensors around the homeWhether rooms are being used.Nothing, after installation. They show movement, not how she slept or how her body is doing.
XK300 Essence, through her doctorHer resting heart rate and breathing rate, every night, read by her care team between visits.Nothing. It sits on the wall above the bed and reads through the duvet.Prescription only, through a remote-monitoring programme. Included for eligible Medicare beneficiaries.
Kardian Somily, for her own bedroomHer own nights on her own phone: resting heart rate, breathing and sleep, beside her usual. She can choose to share them.Nothing. On the wall, a USB plug, nothing to wear.A wellness product for her, not a way to monitor her, and not an alarm.

Many families combine two: an alert service for emergencies, and her doctor reading the nights in between.

Why the night

The night is when the body tells the truth.

During the day, readings move with every staircase and cup of coffee. At night she lies still for hours, and her resting heart rate and breathing settle into a pattern that is hers. That steady pattern is what both Kardian products read: the XK300 Essence for her care team, Somily for her own mornings.

Resting heart rate

Read from the movement of her chest, thousands of times a night, while she is still.

Breathing

Breaths per minute and the rhythm between them, through the night.

How settled the night was

Time in bed, when she got up, and how restless the whole night was.

Beside her own usual

Last night next to her last seven and fourteen. Her pattern, not a population average.

How it works

Somily as a gift. Then she just goes to sleep.

  1. Order it as a giftWe send you a gift receipt and the box goes to her door, with your message and no price inside.
  2. On the wall in three minutesAbove the headboard, near the bed corner, or behind the bed frame. Two strips of tape, one cable to a USB plug. Easy to do on your next visit.
  3. Connect it to her Wi-FiThe free XKare app passes on the Wi-Fi details once, over Bluetooth. After that there is nothing for her to open, charge or press.
  4. Her nights, her choiceEach morning she can see last night beside her usual in the free app. If she wants, she can share her nights with you.

Somily is a general wellness product for her own use. It does not diagnose and it is not an alarm. If her doctor should see the readings, that is the XK300 Essence.

Her dignity, kept

Nothing that watches her. Nothing she has to remember.

No camera

There is no lens. Radar reads movement; it cannot see a face, a room or what she is wearing.

No microphone

It cannot hear a word. Her conversations stay hers.

Nothing to wear

No pendant, no watch, no ring. She sleeps as she always has.

Nothing to charge

It runs on a USB plug from the wall, so it is never flat.

Talk to her first.

It works best when she chose it. Show her the disc, explain that it reads breathing and heart rate and nothing else, and agree together who sees her nights. Many parents who would never accept a camera are happy with something that simply checks they slept well.

What it is not Straight answers

Clear about what it does, and what it does not.

Not an alarm

Somily is not a fall detector and not an emergency service. If she needs a way to call for help, a medical alert service is the right tool, alongside it.

Not a medical device

Somily is a general wellness product. It does not diagnose, and its readings are not FDA-cleared. If something worries you, talk to her doctor.

When her doctor should see it

If she has Medicare and her doctor should follow her heart rate and breathing, the FDA-cleared XK300 Essence is prescribed through a remote-monitoring programme and read by her care team. Check eligibility.

Kardian Somily is a general wellness product. It is not a medical device, does not diagnose, and is not an alarm. Not the XK300 Essence and not equivalent to it. $299 includes two years of Max membership; after that, $6 a month only if you choose to keep it, or the free plan.

Questions

What families ask us.

Does my parent need a smartphone?

For Somily, set-up uses the free XKare app once, over Bluetooth, to pass on the home Wi-Fi details, and you can do that on a visit. With the XK300 Essence there is no app for her at all: it reports to her care team.

Does her home need Wi-Fi?

Yes. Somily sends each night to the XKare app over the home Wi-Fi.

Will it tell me if she falls?

No. Neither Kardian product is a fall detector or an alarm. For emergencies, a medical alert service is the right tool.

Is there a camera or a microphone?

No. There is no lens and no microphone. Radar reads movement. It cannot see a face or hear a word.

Can I send it straight to her as a gift?

Yes. Pre-order it as a gift and we send you a gift receipt, and the box goes to her door with your message and no price inside.

What does it cost?

$299 once, with two years of Max membership included. After two years we ask first: keep Max at $6 a month, or move to the free plan and keep the basics.

Can I pay with an HSA or FSA?

Yes, for qualified customers in the United States. Paying with an HSA or FSA card includes a short health survey; if a licensed clinician approves, they issue a Letter of Medical Necessity. Your plan administrator has the final say.

Can I get alerts about her readings?

Not from Somily. Somily is a wellness product for her own use. If her heart rate and breathing should be followed, the XK300 Essence is FDA-cleared and prescribed through a remote-monitoring programme, so her care team reads the nights. It is included for eligible Medicare beneficiaries.
